<image:caption>This fast-spreading flowering shrub adds a spectacular pop of color to a garden with well-watered soil. It will thrive near greywater basins that receive plenty of water, drinking up what it can and filtering the rest through it’s extensive root system. A food powerhouse for bees, butterflies and moths, Monkey Flower will bring life to the garden and take as much water as you provide.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Often grown for it’s pleasant aroma and textured foliage, Mugwort can be found streamside in nature and thrives in a well-watered garden. This highly adaptable plant loves sun and water, but will tolerate partial shade and spells of dry conditions. Mugwort will show beautifully year-round but it’s more than a decoration – this powerful plant hosts around 28 species of butterflies. It is also used for medicinal purposes, erosion control and soil restoration.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Underground Cisterns</image:title>
<image:caption>The crown jewel of rainwater harvesting, underground cisterns offer unmatched storage capacity along with the ability to collect runoff from the ground as well as roofs - all while being completely hidden. These are often constructed with fiberglass and range in size from 500 to 10,000+ gallons.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Galvanized Steel Tanks</image:title>
<image:caption>Today’s galvanized steel tanks consist of a steel outer shell with a polyethylene liner that holds the water inside. They need to be assembled on site, and offer a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to plastic tanks. Once installed they will last a lifetime, offering sustainable irrigation and a beautiful rustic accent to a native landscape. They range in size from 1500 to 10,000+ gallons.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Mosquito Prevention</image:title>
<image:caption>A common concern with rainwater storage is mosquitos breeding in the tanks. In order to prevent this, tanks must be screened at all inlets and outlets, including vents and overflows. We are well-versed in making sure tanks are 100% screened. If done correctly, mosquitos are unable to enter the tank to lay their eggs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Post-Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>In order to use rainwater with traditional irrigation systems such as drip, it must be filtered and disinfected first. Post-treatment equipment for rainwater has a small footprint, relatively low cost, and can even achieve potable standards for emergency use.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Barrels</image:title>
<image:caption>Rain barrels usually hold 50 gallons each and can often be acquired cheaply through rebate programs (Santa Monica offers up to $2000!). Their usefulness is limited due to their small capacity - while they can help with localized flooding during rain events, they will not hold enough water to be a significant source of irrigation. Theoretically, a large number of them can be interconnected to store more water, but in practice it is difficult to use all of the water from the different barrels - and you need A LOT of them laying around. For these reasons, we do not generally recommend or install rain barrels.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Polyethylene Tanks</image:title>
<image:caption>Polyethylene plastic tanks offer sufficient capacity to make an impact on your garden, and they are more affordable than their steel and underground counterparts. They range in size from 100 to 5000+ gallons. These tanks do not require assembly and can do everything the higher end tanks can do.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Modular Cisterns</image:title>
<image:caption>An alternative to traditional underground cisterns, modular cisterns are built using stackable modules wrapped in a polyethylene lining. Their flexible assembly process allows them to fit in tight and irregular spaces without sacrificing storage capacity. Size is dictated by the number of modules used and is within the ballpark of traditional cisterns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Rainwater Harvesting Tanks - Pre-Filtration</image:title>
<image:caption>Pre-filtration is key, and as simple as a screen to clear out major debris before it enters the tank. Some tanks have them built-in. We are fans of “leaf eater” screens mounted below downspouts for their effectiveness and ease of maintenance. Their slanted design makes them hard to clog and easy to access.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Greywater Corp’s Favorite Books on Greywater and Beyond - The Water Wise Home</image:title>
<image:caption>By Laura Allen We’ve had the pleasure of training and working with Laura, and we’ve never met anyone as relentless in their efforts to conserve water. In her second book she pulls out all of the stops, branching out beyond greywater to an array of water saving measures including rainwater reuse and composting toilets. This complete guide will help you take a holistic look at your home water use, addressing problems at the source and sourcing water from every possible direction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Greywater Corp’s Favorite Books on Greywater and Beyond - Cadillac Desert</image:title>
<image:caption>by Marc Reisner At times this book reads like Mr. Reisner had a personal vendetta against certain historical leaders of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and other government agencies. Perhaps he did. Perhaps we all do. He makes a strong case for believing that said agency and others like it have robbed the American people of a lot of money and, vastly more important, a lot of water and land. As usual, Native American groups faced the worst of the pillaging, large money interests received the spoils, and much of it was done for nothing. We’ll throw this in as a bonus because while it doesn’t talk about greywater or other practical solutions to our water woes, it points to their origins, and to how we got where we are in the American West.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Greywater Corp’s Favorite Books on Greywater and Beyond - Greywater Green Landscape</image:title>
<image:caption>By Laura Allen A standout figure of the greywater movement, Laura Allen started the Greywater Guerillas in Berkley in the pre-legalization days. Since then she has grown her organization into the Greywater Action we know today, a leading institution in greywater advocacy, education and training in California and around the world. But all of this hasn’t stopped her from putting out this detailed and visually captivating practical guide that captures all of the intricacies that go into effective home greywater systems.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Art Ludwig Art was one of the first people to publish a comprehensive DIY guide on home greywater systems. The first edition of his book was released in 2000, a full decade before California rewrote its plumbing code to legalize the act of reusing greywater for irrigation. It was a huge inspiration to the founding of Greywater Corps in 2009, and an invaluable practical resource to this day. If you are serious about DIYing the best possible greywater system for your situation, this deep dive is definitely for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rainwater - You’re going to need a bigger tank</image:title>
<image:caption>It doesn’t rain often here, but when it does you can get a lot of water! A small roof surface, 1000 square feet, will generate 600 gallons with 1” of rain – and LA gets around 15” of rain a year. The challenge is that you need a place to store it. For this reason the residential systems we install are generally 500 to 3000 gallons and up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rainwater - Small and Slimline Tanks</image:title>
<image:caption>These storage systems are a great option on almost any Southern California urban lot due to the manageable size and shape of the storage tanks. These systems fill rapidly – one inch of rain on a small house yields 600 gallons of water. Can fit in side yards and tight spaces Great for vegetable gardens or emergency water No permits or approvals required</image:caption>

<image:title>Rainwater - Water Delivery and Filtration</image:title>
<image:caption>Rainwater can be simply gravity-fed through a hose bibb for local irrigation, or it can be pumped, filtered and purified for spray irrigation. On-demand pumps can provide water pressure similar to municipal sources Hand watering (garden hose) or subsurface irrigation (dripline) require little or no filtration Water can be sterilized to levels safe for spray irrigation or indoor non-potable uses Systems can be integrated into freshwater irrigation, watering with rainwater when tanks are full and automatically switching to municipal water during the summer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For sites with large catchment areas and ample space, larger tanks can be an effective tool for creating an alternative water source & self-reliant home. <image:caption>Modular cisterns allow for large amounts of underground storage in tight or oddly shaped spaces. They consist of a series of “blocks” wrapped in PVC pond liner. They share many of the characteristics of their traditional counterparts. Can provide a very large volume of usable water Pumps are necessary to deliver water Typically viable for new construction or open access sites only Requires permitting and approvals Typically, large tanks (3,000- 20,000-gallon capacity)</image:caption>

<image:title>Benefits - PRESERVE AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS</image:title>
<image:caption>Ecosystems such as lakes, rivers and wetlands need water to survive. Reducing our water use is the only way to preserve these invaluable natural assets.</image:caption>

<image:title>Benefits - HEAL THE BAY</image:title>
<image:caption>Reducing your household waste stream means less sewage goes to the ocean. It also means that the phosphorous found in most soaps, which serves as a fertilizer for your plants, won’t end up in the ocean as well, where it causes harmful red tide algae blooms. This is especially important in large urban areas like Los Angeles, where millions of homes create massive volumes of sewage every day.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ff675b0cca0501131ae4b1d/1612147008235-HNQY1NNHEX7VR0UZ7T1E/peaches+2.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Benefits - BOOST CROP YIELDS</image:title>
<image:caption>For the reasons listed above, greywater will make your crops bear fruit like never before. No need to worry about using “icky” greywater on food. Plants use certain elements found in greywater, such as phosphorous and nitrogen, after microbes in the soil have broken them down. Plants obtain these elements from manure in the same way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Benefits - CREATE A COOL MICRO-CLIMATE</image:title>
<image:caption>Abundant greywater can create a permanent oasis around your home. The daily flow of water will keep your landscaping green and promote the rapid growth of shade trees, which lower temperatures by providing shade and through evapotranspiration, and have been found to lower air conditioning costs in detached houses by 20-30%. In addition, plant cover prevents the ground from absorbing heat, unlike many low-water landscaping surfaces such as gravel, pavement or turf which do the exact opposite, absorbing the sun’s rays to create a heating effect.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pumped System - DESIGN PRINCIPLES</image:title>
<image:caption>Our approach to ecological systems design is that of appropriate technology: small-scale, low-tech solutions that avoid over-engineering in favor of simplicity and natural processes. For example, instead of sterilizing greywater for storage, don’t store greywater. Instead of complicated filters, use bigger emitter holes. Instead of a water-purifying system, use natural soaps and shampoos that won’t harm the environment. This approach led us to the GWC pumped system, which avoids the two major failure points: storing greywater (which is destined to turn septic) and filtering greywater (maintenance, cleaning, and clogging issues).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Residential greywater systems are legal in California, although the permitting process can be daunting. <image:title>Pumped System - PHASE 3: IRRIGATION INSTALLATION</image:title>
<image:caption>Irrigation distribution is through a network of subsurface ball valves, each set in a protective enclosure within a mulch basin – a trench filled with wood chips that act as a medium for greywater distribution and allow greywater to percolate out laterally. The wood chips are an organic greywater filter, catching laundry lint and soap and breaking down impurities through natural microbial action. A second mode of irrigation often incorporated is sheathed drip lines, which are also covered with mulch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pumped System - SYSTEM OVERVIEW</image:title>
<image:caption>The GWC Pumped system is a low-tech, high-functioning greywater system designed for years of trouble-free, low maintenance irrigation with gently-used water that would otherwise go down the drain and be wasted. It is low-tech in the sense that there are no filters to clean or change, no storage tanks, and no electronic controllers to program. The only control is a single on-off switch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mulch Basin - WHAT ARE THEY?</image:title>
<image:caption>Mulch basins are trenches dug around the root system of a plant that are filled with coarse woodchip mulch. An essential component of most greywater systems, they are the mechanism by which the greywater is absorbed and infiltrated to the root system of your plants. Water is piped underground and soaks laterally through the basins to the roots via capillary action underground.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mulch Basin - HOW BIG ARE THEY?</image:title>
<image:caption>This varies depending on the size and water needs of the plant, the soil type, the number of basins, and the quantity of water we will distribute across the whole system. Average basins are 1’ deep x 1’ wide x 3’ long. Some basins may entirely encircle a plant or irrigate multiple plants. Sometimes they are half-circles or kidney shaped, sometimes we keep them rectangular, depending on your needs and the landscape design.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mulch Basin</image:title>
<image:caption>Mulch is also a natural filter—it captures and breaks down any organic matter in your greywater through natural processes in the ground. Mulch filtration is a common-sense, natural solution which prevents the need for maintaining high-tech pre-filtration systems.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mulch Basin - LANDSCAPE PLANNING</image:title>
<image:caption>The ideal location of the basin is at the natural dripline of the plant (the edge of the canopy). It is important that you and/or your landscape designers understand which plants are appropriate to irrigate with greywater and plan to aesthetically incorporate mulch basins into the design. We need sufficient space for basins at the dripline of the plant and you should avoid crowding basins with small ornamentals or ground cover.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mulch Basin - HOW MUCH MULCH?</image:title>
<image:caption>For a typical system we deliver a full truckload of woodchips, between 1-2 cubic yards. We use coarse composted woodchips which break down slowly. We will be removing 1-2 cubic yards of soil to dig the mulch basins. This soil needs to be relocated or distributed somewhere else on-site, or have a designated area from where it can be hauled away if desired.</image:caption>
